Contemporary architectural interiors often contain planes and surfaces that are intrinsically hard and reflective to sound waves, creating acoustic environments that are prone to uncomfortable flutter echo. Conventional acoustic panels are generally unattractive and inappropriate in such applications.
Gill Hewitt of Hewitt Studios has developed and tested an unique constructed textile that combines with modular sound absorbing panels, allowing sound waves to penetrate and be absorbed. In this way, both aesthetic and acoustic benefit can be brought to internal environments. The EN ISO 354 Class A panels promote a feeling of positive acoustic comfort, controlling and regulating reflective sound, making speech and music more intelligible.
High performance sound absorption has been certified by sound testing laboratories, giving an international performance standard (as designated in EN ISO 354) of Class A – the highest possible absorption class.
The dense glass fibre substrate has Class 0 (European Class A2-s1,d0, USA ASTM E 1264 Class A) fire performance and textiles are treated to BS5852 pt2 and BS5867 pt2.
All panels are produced to commission in response to specific interiors projects. Panels are modular and can be combined to create any size. Panel modules are 600mm wide with lengths up to 2700mm. Textile designs and colours can be created to integrate with any interior scheme.
Unique textiles are constructed with multiple layers of fabric and felt, source fabrics using original photographic imagery by Gill Hewitt. Digital printing and hand dyeing is carried out prior to blending through the use of non-woven techniques.
The substrate of the panels consists almost entirely of glass, over 70% of which is recycled from household glass and glass wool.
